The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra isn't that affordable, but it also has better specs.

It features better performance (+23%), better glass protection, a better display, better battery life, and more internal storage (256GB vs. 128GB).

Anything else?

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra also gives you a higher refresh rate, larger (+1.1") display, a telephoto lens (+108 mm), faster-charging speeds (25w vs. 15w), and more RAM (12GB vs. 6GB). But the Galaxy S10e features a lightweight body (58 g./2.05 oz less) and a headphone jack.

How much more will those additional features cost me?

If you're not considering subscribing to a service provider, it'll cost you around $567 more.

Is it worth getting the Galaxy S10e in 2021?

Overall, you'll still get a pretty decent smartphone if you go for the Galaxy S10e in 2021, even more so if you can find it with a great deal. That doesn't mean you should ignore other devices like the Galaxy S10 Lite since it has better performance, better battery life, more security updates, and faster charging.

Is the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra still worth buying in 2021?

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra wasn't released that long ago, so it's obviously, a top recommended device for 2021. You'll love it for its good camera, good battery life, tons of storage, excellent glass protection, and tons of RAM. It doesn't mean you can't take a quick peek at the Apple iPhone 12 Pro, though.

Which One Has The Best Performance?

Geekbench 5 scores the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 23% ahead of its sibling in the multi-core ranking. On a day-to-day basis, it won't be that noticeable.

When it comes to performance, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is way under the average against similarly priced phones. It got a score of 2561, compared to the usual 3279, or close to that.

It's safe to say that the Galaxy S10e can be tagged as an upper mid-range and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra as a lower high-end.

Regarding their chipset, while the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra comes with the Exynos 990 SoC, the Samsung Galaxy S10e has the Exynos 9820 SoC.

Regarding the graphics chipset, the former features the past year's Mali-G77 MP11, and the latter has a Mali-G76 MP12.

The Galaxy S10e features the Android 9 (Pie) and OneUI OS, and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra runs on Android 10 and OneUI.

There's a performance increase of about 17% on the 855 for the Galaxy S10e and a considerable performance increase of about 20% on the 865+ for the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

Which Phone Has The Best Display?

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is the winner here, and it should be noticeable.

Would you prefer the 6.9" AMOLED display of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra or the smaller 5.8" AMOLED panel of the Galaxy S10e? Which one would you choose? Do you favor AMOLED screens?

If you're trying to keep your phone's display small, don't waste your time searching for other devices, and go for the Galaxy S10e. Most phones from its price range don't even come close.

If you're looking for the most high-resolution display, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is a winner here.

It's better to be safe than sorry, so you need to know about their glass protection. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra features the latest Gorilla Glass Victus display. The Galaxy S10e has a Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

If you value an Always-On display, you'll be glad to find it in both Galaxys.

If you don't manually set the screen brightness, the Galaxy S10e can do 803 nits, while the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra can do 221 nits above that.

These two can play HDR10+ videos.

If high refresh rates are your thing, your only option is the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra with its 120hz screen.

About the Galaxy S10e, you should know that 96% of its rivals can play HDR content, 92% have an AMOLED screen, and 76% have an Always-On display. On the other hand, only 24% of them have over 60hz of refresh rate.

Considering the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, I should say that all of its rivals can play HDR content and have an AMOLED screen, and 80% have an Always-On display and have Gorilla Glass 6 or better.

Which Phone Has The Best Cameras?

We can safely assume that the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a better shooter.

Who's gonna win this battle? The Galaxy S10e's primary camera has a 12 Megapixels sensor, with an aperture of f/1.5, a 26mm wide-angle lens, one flash LED, HDR abilities, and Optical Image Stabilization. Videos on its shooter have a maximum resolution of 2160p.

The Galaxy S10e also packs a secondary camera with 16 Megapixels which has an f/2.2 aperture, plus a 12mm ultra-wide-angle lens.

You can find a dual aperture camera on the Galaxy S10e that allows you to choose between f/1.5 or f/2.4.

The selfie camera is a 10 MP sensor with an f/1.9 aperture complemented with a 26 mm wide-angle lens.

Seems like DXOMARK will never review this shooter, but we don't need a crystal ball to guess the score: 113*. By including its wide-angle lens, you'll end up with a score of 119**.

I hope this helps: you'd probably like to know that all of its rivals can record videos in 4K or more and have an ultra-wide-angle lens, and 76% feature Optical Image Stabilization. However, only 20% of them feature a macro lens.

The standard camera on the back of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a whopping 108 Megapixels sensor and a 26mm, f/1.8 aperture, wide-angle lens. It also has one flash LED, HDR capabilities, and Optical Image Stabilization. When it comes to recording videos, it can do 4320p. You'll also get two additional sensors, one with 12 Megapixels, an aperture of f/3.0 and an astounding 120mm telephoto lens, and another with 12 Megapixels (f/2.2) with a 13mm ultra-wide-angle lens.

For your information: If you zoom in and crop a 108 Megapixels photo, you can get (for example) an additional 2x of optical zoom and a 27 Megapixels sample.

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is also known for its impressive 50x hybrid Space Zoom. In theory, that's a step down from the S20 Ultra 100x, but since it's an "AI-powered" zoom, it shouldn't matter much.

You can get selfies with 10 MP Megapixels. It has a lens with f/2.2 of aperture and a 26 mm wide-angle lens.

DXOMARK evaluated this camera, and here's the score: 122. And by adding the telephoto and wide-angle lenses, that score goes up to 136. You can click here to check it out.

Last (but not least), if you must know, all of its rivals can record videos in 4 or 8K, have an ultra-wide-angle lens, and feature Optical Image Stabilization, and 93% feature a telephoto lens. That said, none of them feature a macro lens.

One can place the Galaxy S10e as an upper mid-range while the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra leans towards the high-end.

The Galaxy S10e's lens can be great in low light conditions owing to its greater aperture.

*I do recommend DXOMARK's reviews. Unfortunately, there are lots of good cameras left out of their labs. So when I find one such shooter, I score every camera spec (like sensor size, lenses, and so on) to get a similar global score. This score should have a topmost discrepancy of 2 points.

**You should give this score a margin of error of up to 6 points, at least for phones with no zoom and up to 35 to 40MP. They moved to a new camera test protocol, and I only have few reviewed devices to deduce a compatible score.

Who has the best frame?

The Galaxy S10e does have an advantage here, thanks to its weight and the number of color options.

The Galaxy S10e is 5.59 inches (142 mm) tall and 2.72 inches (69 mm) long. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is 22 mm taller and 8 mm wider (about 0.87 by 0.32 inches).

When it comes to thickness, they're almost equal: 7 mm (0.28 inches) vs. 8 mm (0.32 inches). In addition to that, the Galaxy S10e is approximately 13% smaller than the average phone for its price segment.

They both have a beautiful glass body. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is 58 g. (2.29 oz) heavier than its sibling, which sits at 150 g. (5.29 oz). If you're looking for a lightweight device, the Galaxy S10e has a "weight to screen size" score of 7.8, which means it's one of the lightest phones for a 5.8 inches screen. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, in its turn, has 4.4, so nothing to state here.

If you like having color options, you can buy the Galaxy S10e in Prism White, Prism Green, Prism Black, Flamingo Pink, Canary Yellow, and Prism Blue. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, in its turn, comes in Mystic Bronze, Mystic White, and Mystic Black.

If the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is small enough for you, that's neat. If not, then really consider getting the other one.

Does a fingerprint scanner matter to you? Both phones have one.

The Galaxy S10e is resistant to water up to 1 to 3 meters, just like the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. That should be for up to 30 minutes, on standby, and freshwater only.

Which has the best battery?

The Galaxy S10e has a 3100 mAh battery, and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a 4500 mAh. And according to GSMArena's tests, the latter does have better battery life.

This is how the Galaxy S10e performs after a full charge:

  • After 1 hour of talking, 1 hour of web browsing, and 1 hour of video playback, you'll be at 79% of the battery charge.
  • By talking for 1 hour, browsing the web for 3 hours, and playing videos for 1 hour, you'll get down to 61% left.
  • For 1 hour of talking, 1 hour of web browsing, and 3 hours of video playback, the phone will have 65% left for the rest of the day.

And this is where the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra ends at:

  • For 1 hour of talking, 1 hour of web browsing, and 1 hour of video playback, you'll be at 83% of the battery charge.
  • If you do 1 hour of talking, 3 hours of web browsing, and 1 hour of video playback, you'll get down to 69% left.
  • If you do 1 hour of talking, 1 hour of web browsing, and 3 hours of video playback, this is where your battery will be: 72%.

So, the Galaxy S10e doesn't have the best battery life out there, but Samsung did everything in its power to save as much "power" as possible (pun intended). That's the conclusion that we take from its "battery to phone size" rate of 7.7.

If one of these will end up being the one, you'll have quick charging on your next phone: 15w for the Galaxy S10e and 25w for the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

They all include wireless charging, and they charge at 15w. That's nice.

Both can charge any QI-enabled gadgets, like smartphones or earbuds.

Fast wireless charging on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is likewise a nice plus. You won't find many phones as fast at about its price.

The Snapdragon 865+ variant also has better battery efficiency, about 7% of additional screen-on-time.

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Clearly.

The Galaxy S10e features 128GB of internal storage and 6GB of RAM. You can add at least 256GB here because if it's too short for you, you can buy a MicroSD card.

In its turn, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra features 256GB of storage and 12GB of RAM. You can also add a MicroSD card if you want.

Which is the most connectivity-friendly?

I'd go for the Galaxy S10e if you really value a headphone jack.

Both devices feature the standard Bluetooth 5.0 module. Both devices also feature the standard NFC module.

If wireless buds aren't your thing, the Galaxy S10e may be your only option here. You may go for an adapter as a last resort on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, but it really isn't the same.

Are you ready for that final score? We're almost there. But first, let's see where its rivals are. They're at 6.4 (for the Galaxy S10e) and 7.6 (for the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra).

Verdict: What Makes the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Stand Out?

If you're willing to pick any of these, clearly, display size doesn't matter that much to you.

While that may be the biggest difference between them, there is another significant difference here that may be the biggest hurdle, and that is the price. Unless you are considering an upgrade.

Anyways, with the Note 20 Ultra, you'll get a somewhat significant performance boost, double the refresh rate, and a much better glass protection. In addition to that, there's the picture quality and the fantastic telephoto lens.

That's not all, because you'll also get way better battery life, double then RAM and the internal storage.

The bad news is that you'll lose the headphone jack.

But there are a few things that I don't consider, like price, brand value, size, resell value, OS (iOS or Android), user experience, updates, RAM (included on performance), battery to phone size, display size to weight, network (LTE/5G), and biometrics.

Progress bars explained

#1: A big red progress bar means that this value is way below the average. In this case, it's 28.85MP, and the iPhone XR is 16.85MP below the average.

#2: In this example, the XR is just 0.36mm below the average, that's why the red bar is almost unnoticeable.

#3: On the other hand, the SE 2 is 1.8mm above (hence, the green bar) the 26.2mm of average.

#4: Performance-wise, the SE 2 is well above the average (of 2512) for its price range. That's the reason the green bar is that long.

"Display size to phone weight" ratio explained

This indeed is a "display size to phone weight" ratio, but because every phone ended up somewhere between 0.0272 and 0.0421, I've amplified (adapted) those values so they would fit in a 0-10 scale. As of now, the best smartphone is the Samsung Galaxy A40, with 140g. (4.94 oz) for a 5.9 inch display. It got a score of 9.92. While the worse device is the iPhone 8 Plus, which weighs 202 g. (7.13 oz) and has a 5.5-inch display. It ended up with a score of 0.75.

Please, be aware that this score is subject to change if and when a new smartphone comes along that ends up being outside of this scale.

"Battery to device size" ratio explained

This score should give you an idea about the energy footprint of the devices you're considering. It reflects not only the hardware and the energy that it requires but also the amount of energy that the battery can deliver.

The major spenders on any device should be the display and the SoC. But everything from a notification led to its modems need to be optimized, or else, the OEM should simply include a bigger battery as a compensation. Unfortunately, it isn't always possible due to size limitations. But in the end, if a particular OEM can do a good job and give you excellent battery life on a small device, so should everyone else. That's why I've added a "battery to device size" ratio. But since the real scale went from 119 (for the Galaxy S10e, Snapdragon variant) and up to 164 (for the iPhone 7 Plus), I've decided to convert them so they would fit in a 0-10 scale, being 0 the worst device, (the iPhone 7 Plus) and 10 the one every OEM should look up to.

As an example, Apple did an excellent job on the iPhone 7. It has a score of 8. Despite having a small capacity, the hardware is well optimized, and it still gives you decent battery life considering its size. The iPhone 7 Plus, on the other hand, with those bezels shrinking its display size, clearly could've been the #1 in our top 10 list of best battery devices if Apple simply filled all that empty space with a bigger battery.

As a side note: I haven't included the dept of the devices in this formula because even if a device ended up being 1mm/0.03 inches thicker, it wouldn't matter that much to those who really value battery life.

Please, be aware that this score is subject to change if and when a new smartphone comes along that ends up being outside of this scale.

The battery score is based on Gsmarena's endurance rating and is taken with a screen brightness of 200 nits and a refresh rate of 60hz.

Assumptions: The display is off during a call, there's a web page refresh every 10 seconds, and the video playback is in Airplane mode.

Since the guys at DxoMark don't review every camera out there, I've come up with a formula based on the ones that they do rate, so I could get an equivalent score for the ones they don't review. After testing it against these cameras, I got the deviation between that and their DxO score.

As you can see, most cameras sit between 1 and -1, while a few of them go up to 2 or -2. That means it's reasonable to assume other similar cameras that they don't review to, in the worst-case scenario, be anywhere from -2 to 2 points from the score that the formula gets.

For example: Given that the Pixel 4 got 117 points and that the Pixel 4 XL share the same year and camera specs, it's reasonable to expect a score of 117 too. But in reality, if they do review that camera, it may end up anywhere between 115 and 119.

Be aware that at DxO, they give a score based on their opinion, not based on any formula. That's why I think there's an odd difference of 6 points between the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X. In theory, they should have the same camera.

I'm guessing that the Mi 9T Pro got a deviation of 7 points because they tested its Chinese variant (the K20 Pro).

Update: They just changed their protocol to include preview image evaluation and trustability. I'm keeping the old table (for now) for reference purposes, and I'll be adding a new one as soon as they review at least a couple of new mclass-range cameras.

You can expect the same (or a bit bigger) deviation for high-end cameras, but anything with a score below 100-110 should be taken with a grain of salt.

This is valclass for all cameras tested with the previous protocol. For those that they dclassn't test, the deviation may be up to twice as much.

Nits

With regards to AMOLED screens, sometimes OEMs claim higher maximum brightness. That's because an AMOLED screen can push its brightness progressively higher as its white area gets smaller.

These values are from the lab tests made by GSMArena, and their white test pattern takes up 75% of the physical size of the screen.
