Even if for a short period, there was a month in 2020 when these two were the best you could find in the tech world, and that month was September. Nevertheless, some people may still find this comparison interesting for some other reason, so let's check them out.

Samsung introduced its Galaxy Note 20 Ultra model in August of 2020. Meanwhile, Apple's iPhone 11 Pro Max started to sell in September of 2019.

We've run down the specs, design, price, and much more in this guide to help you choose between the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

Bottom Line

Which is better, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra or the iPhone 11 Pro Max?

The price of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra isn't that much higher, but it also has better specs.

It comes with a better display, more internal storage (256GB vs. 64GB), and external storage. But the iPhone 11 Pro Max adds better performance (+34%).

What else stands out?

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra also has a higher refresh rate, Always-On, larger (+0.4") display, a telephoto lens (+68 mm), faster wireless charging (15w vs. 5w), reverse wireless charging, and more RAM (12GB vs. 4GB). But the iPhone 11 Pro Max will also give you a cleaner user interface.


But how much more will I have to pay for the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra?

If you're considering a new and unlocked smartphone, you'll have to spend approximately $95 more.


Is it worth getting the iPhone 11 Pro Max in 2021?

Of course. Its performance won't disappoint you for sure.


Is the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra still worth buying in 2021?

Sure. It's one of the best smartphones out there.

Performance

What about their chipsets? The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra features the past generation's Exynos 990 processor and the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max, the Apple A13 processor.

If you're a gamer, you'll like to know that the former features the past year's Mali-G77 MP11, and the latter has a proprietary Apple GPU.

In terms of performance, Geekbench 5 (IOS)(Android) scores the iPhone 11 Pro Max 34% ahead of its rival on the multi-core rankings. If you value performance, be aware of that difference, as it will be noticeable daily. iOS is much lighter than Android because of the optimizations that Apple does.

You're not looking for the slowest phone around, right? The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is clearly under the average if you consider related priced phones. About 28% below.

We can classify the iPhone 11 Pro Max as high-end and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra as a lower high-end device.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max features the iOS 13 OS, while the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra comes with Android 10 and OneUI.

PS: The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ (with the Adreno 650 GPU) and the Exynos 990 (with the Mali-G77) are market-dependent.

There's a considerable performance increase of about 20% on the 865+ for the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

Display

While the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra got a 6.9-inch AMOLED display, the iPhone 11 Pro Max got a smaller AMOLED display with 6.5-inches. It all comes down to personal preferences for both the display type and size. Most people seem to prefer AMOLED for its saturated colors and higher contrast.

The display of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a resolution of 1440x3088 Quad HD. The iPhone 11 Pro Max, in its turn, has 1242x2688 Full HD. If you fancy edge-to-edge displays, at least the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a tinier notch.

No one likes to look at a shattered screen, so be aware: The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra features the latest Gorilla Glass Victus display. The iPhone 11 Pro Max has a Corning toughened glass.

If you don't manually set the screen brightness, the iPhone 11 Pro Max can go up to 811 nits, while the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra can do 213 nits above that.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max does HDR10 video, while its rival can display HDR10+ content.

If you're looking for high refresh rate displays, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, with its 120hz screen, is clearly the winner here.

If this is something you value, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is getting outperformed here.

Considering the iPhone 11 Pro Max, 89% of its rivals can play HDR content, 96% have an AMOLED screen, and 93% of them have an Always-On display.

Compared to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, just so you know, all of its rivals can play HDR content and have an AMOLED screen, 77% have an Always-On display, and 85% of them have Gorilla Glass 6 or better.

Cameras

Things are different when it comes to lenses. The iPhone 11 Pro Max's primary camera has a 12 MP sensor, with an aperture of f/1.8, a 26mm wide-angle lens, four flash LEDs, HDR abilities, and Optical Image Stabilization. Videos on its shooter have a maximum resolution of 2160p.

It also features two auxiliary cameras. One has 12 MP and an aperture of f/2.0 plus a 52mm telephoto lens. And another shooter with 12 MP (f/2.4) with a 13mm ultra-wide-angle lens.

Want to know about its selfie capabilities? It has a 12 MP (f/2.2) shooter and a 23 mm wide-angle lens.

This camera came out of DxOMark's labs with a score of 132. And if you take into account the telephoto and wide-angle lenses, it can go up to 143 points. If you want to know more about it, click here.

To put things in perspective: keep in mind that all of its rivals can record videos in 4K or more, have an ultra-wide-angle lens, and feature Optical Image Stabilization. Though only 19% of them feature a macro lens.

The standard camera on the back of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a whopping 108 MP sensor and a 26mm, f/1.8 aperture, wide-angle lens. It also has one flash LED, HDR capabilities, and Optical Image Stabilization. When it comes to recording videos, it can do 4320p. It also has a secondary 12 MP camera with an aperture of f/3.0 and an astounding 120mm telephoto lens, and an extra 12 MP (f/2.2) with a 13mm ultra-wide-angle lens.

If you take a 108 Megapixels snapshot, you can zoom in on it and do a crop in the middle to get a sample with 27 Megapixels and 2x optical zoom.

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is also known for its impressive 50x hybrid Space Zoom. In theory, that's a step down from the S20 Ultra 100x, but since it's an "AI-powered" zoom, it shouldn't matter much.

You can get selfies with 10 MP Megapixels. It has a lens with f/2.2 of aperture and a 26 mm wide-angle lens.

The guys over at the DxOMark labs rated this camera with 122 points. By considering the telephoto and wide-angle lenses, that score goes up to 136. You can click here to check it out.

Furthermore, just like the other device, all of its rivals can record videos in 4 or 8K, have an ultra-wide-angle lens, and feature Optical Image Stabilization, and 92% of them feature a telephoto lens. Moreover, none of them feature a macro lens.

You should note that the iPhone 11 Pro Max is in the neighborhood of 51 points above its rivals for the same budget. So the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra isn't good enough to win this battle.

One can place these two as high-end.

Just because the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra rules the optical zoom round doesn't mean that the 2x optical zoom of the iPhone 11 Pro Max isn't a great feature.

Body

You can guess who's taller but not who's wider because that's something they have in common: 77 mm (3.03 inches).

Both have about the same thickness: 8 mm (0.32 inches).

A front and back glass body does make these phones look premium on your hands. The iPhone 11 Pro Max is 18 g. (0.63 oz) heavier than its rival, which sits at 208 g. (7.34 oz). But because this is a bit relative, I've developed a formula for a kind of "display size to phone weight" ratio. The iPhone 11 Pro Max got a score of 1.7, meaning it's one of the heaviest phones for its display size. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, in its turn, has 4.4, so nothing to state here.

You'll also get some color options here. The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra comes in Mystic Bronze, Mystic White, and Mystic Black. The Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max, in its turn, comes in Space Gray, Gold, Silver, and Midnight Green.

If the iPhone 11 Pro Max is big enough for you, then excellent. If not, you should check other phones.

Would you like to have a fingerprint scanner? The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has one, but the iPhone 11 Pro Max doesn't.

You can still use biometrics to log in on the iPhone 11 Pro Max. At least Apple opted for the Face ID sensor instead.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max is water-resistant in up to 1 to 3 meters, identical to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. That shouldn't last over half an hour, on standby, and freshwater only.

Battery

You can probably guess who's the winner here by looking at these numbers: 4500 mAh vs. 3969 mAh. But are the numbers really that clear? If you charge them up and run some tests, that's how the iPhone 11 Pro Max performs:

  • By talking for 1 hour, browsing the web for 1 hour, and playing videos for 1 hour, you should have 83% of the battery left for the rest of the day.
  • After 1 hour of talking, 3 hours of web browsing, and 1 hour of video playback, you'll probably have 69% left for the rest of the day.
  • For 1 hour of talking, 1 hour of web browsing, and 3 hours of video playback, you'll be with 73%.

And these are the results for the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra:

  • From 1 hour of talking, 1 hour of web browsing, and 1 hour of video playback, you'll end up with 83% of the battery charge.
  • For 1 hour of talking, 3 hours of web browsing, and 1 hour of video playback, the battery charge will be about 69%.
  • From 1 hour of talking, 1 hour of web browsing, and 3 hours of video playback, you'll still get 72% to spend doing other things.

It's a draw. You shouldn't expect notable differences here.

If one of these will end up being the one, you'll have quick-charging on your next phone: 18w for the iPhone 11 Pro Max and 25w for the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

If you value wireless charging, they can do 5w vs. 15w.

A nice add-on to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is the ability to charge any Qi-enabled gadgets at 4.5w.

The Snapdragon 865+ variant also has better battery efficiency, about 7% of additional screen-on-time.

Storage

In terms of RAM, the iPhone 11 Pro Max brings 4GB. In terms of storage, it has 64GB. Memory cards aren't welcome here. If 4k videos and games are your things, it could be an issue sooner than later. Furthermore, other devices from this budget usually have more RAM and more storage. They're around 8GB of RAM and 154Gb of storage.

On the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, you'll find 256GB of internal storage and 12GB of RAM. You can add a MicroSD card if you want. Again, you can accidentally get the majority of its rivals with less RAM and less storage. 9Gb of RAM and 162Gb of storage: that's the average, not the best you can find, as you can see here.

Neither storage nor RAM should be an issue on both phones. However, if you can't get enough of the record button, 64 GB may be too short for you.

Connectivity

When it comes to connectivity, both phones have Bluetooth 5.0. You can also find NFC on both of them.

There isn't much to say about the 3.5mm headphone jack, except that it simply isn't here. You can buy an adapter, but the wireless buds are your only option. You can have it anyway if you don't care that much about them. The Sony Xperia 1 II can give you a headphone jack.

The Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max may not be the best bang for your buck. But do search for any deals or price drops before making up your mind. The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, on the other hand, is usually more costly, but I'm not here to tell you if it's worth it.

Verdict: What Makes the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Stand Out?

Alright, so the Note 20 Ultra is the clear winner. But that doesn't mean you should just ignore the iPhone because, in the end, it is much more future proof. You'll get much more performance (unless you can get the Snapdragon variant of the Note 20 Ultra) and at least half-a-decade of software updates. But if you do prefer a phone with better specs, then the Note 20 Ultra is the one. You'll get better DPI, better refresh rates, better outdoor brightness, an Always-On display, and, in theory, better glass protection. You'll also get better zoom, a lighter device, faster charging speeds, much more RAM, and storage.

But there are a few things that I don't consider, like price, brand value, size, resell value, OS (iOS or Android), user experience, updates, RAM (included on performance), battery to phone size, display size to weight, and biometrics.

Progress bars explained





#1: A big red progress bar means that this value is way below the average. In this case, it's 28.85MP, and the iPhone XR is 16.85MP below the average.

#2: In this example, the XR is just 0.36mm below the average, that's why the red bar is almost unnoticeable.

#3: On the other hand, the SE 2 is 1.8mm above (hence, the green bar) the 26.2mm of average.

#4: Performance-wise, the SE 2 is well above the average (of 2512) for its price range. That's the reason the green bar is that long.

"Display size to phone weight" ratio explained



This indeed is a "display size to phone weight" ratio, but because every phone ended up somewhere between 0.0272 and 0.0421, I've amplified (adapted) those values so they would fit in a 0-10 scale. As of now, the best smartphone is the Samsung Galaxy A40, with 140g. (4.94 oz) for a 5.9 inch display. It got a score of 9.92. While the worse device is the iPhone 8 Plus, which weighs 202 g. (7.13 oz) and has a 5.5-inch display. It ended up with a score of 0.75.

Please, be aware that this score is subject to change if and when a new smartphone comes along that ends up being outside of this scale.

"Battery to device size" ratio explained



This score should give you an idea about the energy footprint of the devices you're considering. It reflects not only the hardware and the energy that it requires but also the amount of energy that the battery can deliver.

The major spenders on any device should be the display and the SoC. But everything from a notification led to its modems need to be optimized, or else, the OEM should simply include a bigger battery as a compensation. Unfortunately, it isn't always possible due to size limitations. But in the end, if a particular OEM can do a good job and give you excellent battery life on a small device, so should everyone else. That's why I've added a "battery to device size" ratio. But since the real scale went from 119 (for the Galaxy S10e, Snapdragon variant) and up to 164 (for the iPhone 7 Plus), I've decided to convert them so they would fit in a 0-10 scale, being 0 the worst device, (the iPhone 7 Plus) and 10 the one every OEM should look up to.

As an example, Apple did an excellent job on the iPhone 7. It has a score of 8. Despite having a small capacity, the hardware is well optimized, and it still gives you decent battery life considering its size. The iPhone 7 Plus, on the other hand, with those bezels shrinking its display size, clearly could've been the #1 in our top 10 list of best battery devices if Apple simply filled all that empty space with a bigger battery.

As a side note: I haven't included the dept of the devices in this formula because even if a device ended up being 1mm/0.03 inches thicker, it wouldn't matter that much to those who really value battery life.

The battery score is based on Gsmarena's endurance rating and is taken with a screen brightness of 200 nits and a refresh rate of 60hz.

Assumptions: The display is off during a call, there's a web page refresh every 10 seconds, and the video playback is in Airplane mode.

Formula deviation

Since the guys at DxoMark don't review every camera out there, I've come up with a formula based on the ones that they do rate, so I could get an equivalent score for the ones they don't review. After testing it against these cameras, I got the deviation between that and their DxO score.

As you can see, most cameras sit between 1 and -1, while a few of them go up to 2 or -2. That means it's reasonable to assume other similar cameras that they don't review to, in the worst-case scenario, be anywhere from -2 to 2 points from the score that the formula gets.

For example: Given that the Pixel 4 got 117 points and that the Pixel 4 XL share the same year and camera specs, it's reasonable to expect a score of 117 too. But in reality, if they do review that camera, it may end up anywhere between 115 and 119.

Be aware that at DxO, they give a score based on their opinion, not based on any formula. That's why I think there's an odd difference of 6 points between the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X. In theory, they should have the same camera.

I'm guessing that the Mi 9T Pro got a deviation of 7 points because they tested its Chinese variant (the K20 Pro).

Update: They just changed their protocol to include preview image evaluation and trustability. I'm keeping the old table (for now) for reference purposes, and I'll be adding a new one as soon as they review at least a couple of new mid-range cameras.

You can expect the same (or a bit bigger) deviation for high-end cameras, but anything with a score below 100-110 should be taken with a grain of salt.

This is valid for all cameras tested with the previous protocol. For those that they didn't test, the deviation may be up to twice as much.

Nits


With regards to AMOLED screens, sometimes OEMs claim higher maximum brightness. That's because an AMOLED screen can push its brightness progressively higher as its white area gets smaller.

These values are from the lab tests made by GSMArena, and their white test pattern takes up 75% of the physical size of the screen.
